[FI] Asetimme tammikuun edustajiston kokouksessa alkavalle vuodelle tärkeimmät kehittämiskohteemme. Puheessa kannustamme sekä JYYn hallitusta ja toimistoa toimintaan, mutta haastamme myös itsemme ja muut edustajistoryhmät mukaan talkoisiin. Ohessa on puheemme kokonaisuudessaan:

Hyvät edustajiston jäsenet, hallitus ja arvon puheenjohtajisto!

Edustajistokauden ollessa jo yli puolessa välissä on aika alkaa todella pohtia edarivaaleja. Vaalien näkyvyydestä tai oikeastaan näkyvyyden puutteesta tulisi puhua enemmän. Toisaalta pelkkä puhe ei riitä vaan tässä kohtaa vuotta voimme tehdä asioita ja suunnitella keinoja, jotka aidosti vaikuttavat.

Olemme sitä mieltä, että meidän tulisi yhdessä pohtia edustajistovaalien toimittamista ryhmärajat ylittäen. AU:ssa toivomme, että kaikki ryhmät ottaisivat osaa tähän jo keväällä alkavaan rupeamaan ja toimisimme aidosti yhdessä, ei pelkästään omien tulosten, vaan koko ylioppilaskunnan äänestysaktiivisuuden nostamiseksi. Matala äänestysprosentti murentaa koko ylioppilaskunnan vaikuttavuutta, sillä jos vain pieni osa antaa äänensä, miten voidaan väittää ylioppilaskunnan puhuvan kaikkien äänellä?

Ehdotamme, että kokoonnumme alkuvuodesta esimerkiksi yhteisen iltakoulun merkeissä, jotta voimme tehdä suunnitelmia kohti onnistumista, jo ennen keskusvaalilautakunnan asettamista.

Vaalien aikana ja ennen vaaleja tietysti toivoisimme näkevämme paljon enemmän säpinää, enemmän paneeleja, näkyvämpiä julisteita, tempauksia, ständeilyä. Muutoksen aikaansaaminen vaatii ryhmiltä aktiivisuutta, mutta emme voi laskea vain sen varaan. Kaikilla ryhmillä ei ole samassa määrin kokemusta, osaamista ja aikaa, joten myös keskusvaalikunnan, hallituksen ja toimiston tulee ottaa roolia esimerkiksi tarjoamalla ehdokkaille koulutusta.Varsinkin, kun useat ryhmät ovat uudistumassa kokeneempien jäädessä pois valmistumisen tai paikkakunnalta muuton vuoksi.

Näemme, että ylioppilaskuntaa on tuotava näkyviin opiskelijoiden kielellä. Lisäksi on kohdattava niitä opiskelijoita, jotka ovat tällä hetkellä aliedustettuina ylioppilaskunnan toiminnassa. Esimerkiksi psykologian ja kasvatustieteiden tiedekunnassa on valtava määrä opiskelijoita, jotka voisivat olla kiinnostuneita ylioppilaskuntatoiminnasta ja vaikuttamisesta, mutta meidän pitäisi onnistua tekemään omaa toimintaamme näkyväksi heidän parissaan.

Tärkeään rooliin tulee myös opiskelijaa lähempänä olevat yhteisöt, erityisesti ainejärjestöt. Aj-toimijoiden tietämystä JYY-asioista tulisi lisätä useammasta syystä. Ensinnäkin tämä innostaa aj-toimijoita, jotta he puolestaan innostaisivat jäsenensä vaaliuurnille. Ja toisekseen aj-toimijoissa on perinteiseti ollut ja varmasti myös ensi syksyä ajatellen on monia potentiaalisia JYY-toimijoita.

Lisäksi on suuren opiskelijaedustajahaun aika. Opiskelijoiden asioihin vaikuttamisesta kiinnostuneet tulisi tavoittaa entistä paremmin ja innostaa tekemään sitä edunvalvontatyötä, josta JYY on tunnettu. Ei myöskään olisi pahitteeksi jos opiskelijaedustajien ja JYYn toimintaa tiivistettäisiin muun muassa laajoja edunvalvonnallisissa asioita käsiteltäessä.

Opiskelijaedustajien tuottaminen on ylioppilaskunnan lakisääteinen tehtävä, ja nämä henkilöt kantavat elintärkeää roolia opiskelijoiden etua ajaessaan. Vaalit taas ovat ylioppilaskunnan keuhkot.

Sitten luultavasti merkittävimpään päätökseen, jonka tulemme tänä keväänä tekemään. Se koskee opiskelijoiden yhteistä olohuonetta eli Ilokivi Venueta. AU:ssa ajattelemme, ettei kaiken liiketoiminnan tarvitse tavoitella voittoa, vaan se voi tuottaa jäsenistöllemme muunkinlaista lisäarvoa.

Alvarin unioni tunnistaa Venuen arvon sekä opiskelijoille että laajemmin jyväskyläläisille. Se on tärkeä resurssi myös ylioppilaskunnan tapahtumasektorille, joka tukee opiskelijoiden hyvinvointia, vaalii opiskelijakulttuuria ja muokkaa jäsenistön mielikuvaa JYYstä. Tapahtumasektorimme on omiaan takaamaan, että JYYllä on aktiivisia jäseniä jatkossakin, vaikka opiskelijoilla on entistä vähemmän resursseja tehdä vapaaehtoistyötä eikä automaatiojäsenyyskään ole kiveenhakattu.

Venueen liittyy taloudellisia ja käyttäjäryhmää koskevia haasteita, joihin AU tahtoo löytää ratkaisuja tänä keväänä yhdessä muiden ryhmien kanssa. Lopulta kyse on myös arvovalinnoista. Toivomme, että jokainen ryhmä muodostaa Venueta koskevan mielipiteensä tarkan harkinnan ja koko kevään mittaisen prosessin myötä, ei viimeisellä viikolla ennen kesäkuun kokousta.

Kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden asema tulee olemaan tärkeä keskustelunaihe tänäkin vuonna. Yliopiston kansainvälistyessä on tärkeää, että kv-opiskelijat saavat äänensä kuuluviin yliopiston hallinnossa. Myös ylioppilaskunnan toiminnan kannalta kv-opiskelijat ovat keskeisessä roolissa. Olemme yhdessä ottaneet merkittäviä askeleita, mutta vielä on paljon tehtävää ja olisi hienoa nähdä kv-opiskelijoita myös muiden edariryhmien listoilla tulevissa vaaleissa. Kaikilla opiskelijoilla tulee olla yhdenvertainen mahdollisuus osallistua päätöksentekoon yliopistoyhteisön kaikilla tasoilla.

Viime vuonna edustajiston työskentely oli varsin asiakirjapainotteista. Tänä vuonna meillä on enemmän aikaa ryhmien väliseen keskusteluun ja edellä mainittujen keskeisten kysymysten pohtimiseen. Käytetään siis tämä aika viisaasti ja ylioppilaskunnan tulevaisuutta ajatellen.

[En] At the January Representative Council meeting, we set out our priorities for the year ahead. In our speech we encourage both the JYY Board and the JYY Office to take action, but we also challenge ourselves and other groups of representatives to get involved. We have attached a translation of our speech here:

Dear representatives, the Board and the Chairs!

With the Parliamentary term more than halfway over, it is time to really start thinking about the next elections. More should be said about the visibility, or rather the lack of visibility, of the elections. On the other hand, it is not enough just to talk, but at this point in the year, we can do things and plan ways to make a real impact.

We believe that we should come together acrossa group boundaries to consider, how to take on the elections. As the AU, we hope that all groups will take part in this exercise, which will start already in the spring. We hope that we will genuinely work together, not only to improve our own results, but to increase the turnout of the student union as a whole. A low turnout erodes the effectiveness of the whole student union, because if only a small percentage vote, how can the student union be said to speak with the voice of all?

We propose to have a meeting early in the year, for example in a joint evening school, to plan for success in this. Even before a central election committee is set up.

During and before the elections, we would like to see a lot more excitement, more panels, more visible posters, events and active lobbyists on the campuses. It will take a lot of effort from groups to bring about change, but we cannot rely on that alone. Not all groups have the same level of experience, skills and time. The central election committee, the board and the office also have a role to play, for example by providing training for candidates. Especially as many groups are in the process of renewing themselves as more experienced ones leave due to graduation or relocation.

We recognize the need to make the student union visible in the language of the students. We also need to reach out to those students who are currently underrepresented in student union activities. For example, in the faculties of psychology and education, there are a huge number of students who could be interested in student union activities and influence, but we should succeed in making our own activities visible to them.

Communities closer to the students, especially subject associations, also have an important role to play. There are a number of reasons why the knowledge of JYY issues should be increased. Firstly, this will inspire the activists, so that they in turn inspire their members to stand for election. And secondly, there have traditionally been, and certainly will be next autumn, many potential JYY actives.

It’s also time for the big student representative recruitment. Those interested in influencing student affairs should be better reached and inspired to do the advocacy work that JYY is known for. It would not be a bad thing if the student representatives and JYY were to work more closely together, for example when dealing with broad advocacy issues.

The production of student representatives is a statutory function of the Students’ Union, and these individuals play a vital role in promoting the interests of students. Elections, on the other hand, are the lungs of the Students’ Union.

And then probably the most important decision we will take this spring. It concerns the student common room, the Ilokivi Venue. At AU, we believe that not all business has to be for monetary profit, but that services can provide other kinds of added value for our members.

The Union of Alvar recognises the value of Venue both to students and to the wider community in Jyväskylä. It is also an important resource for the Student Union’s events sector, which supports student well-being, fosters student culture and shapes the image of JYY in the minds of its members. Our events sector will ensure that JYY will continue to have active members, even if students have fewer resources and opportunities to volunteer, and automatic membership is not set in stone.

The Venue faces financial and user group challenges, which the AU wants to find solutions to this spring, together with other groups. Ultimately, it is also about value choices. We hope that each group will form its opinion on Venue through careful deliberation and a process that will last throughout the spring, not in the last week before the June meeting.

The status of international students will be an important topic of discussion again this year. As the university becomes more international, it is important that international students have a voice in the university administration. In terms of the Student Union’s activities, international students also play a key role. Together we have taken important steps, but there is still a lot to do and it would be great to see the participation of international students on the lists of other interest groups in the upcoming elections. All students should have equal access to decision-making at all levels of the university community.

Last year the work of the Representative Council was rather document-oriented. This year we will have more time for discussion between the groups and for reflection on the key issues mentioned above. So let us use this time wisely and with the future of the Students’ Union in mind.

[FI] Alvarin unioni piti ryhmäpuheenvuoron edustajiston kokouksessa, jossa ryhmiä oli pyydetty kertomaan tavoitteensa tulevalle kaudelle. Haluamme avoimuuden nimissä ja vastuuntunnosta äänestäjiä kohtaan jakaa huolella valmistellun puheemme:

JYYn täytyy nyt ja jatkossa olla yhteisö, johon halutaan kuulua ja jonka toimintaan halutaan vaikuttaa. Edustajistovaalien heikko äänestysprosentti antoi meille selkeän näytteen siitä, että töitä tämän eteen on vielä tehtävänä. Meillä edaattoreilla on tärkeä rooli JYYn näkyvyyden edistäjänä omissa yhteisössämme. Käytetäänhän tätä.

Tilannetta ei kuitenkaan yksittäinen edaattori muuta, tarvitsemme yhteisöä. Yhteisöllisyyden vahvistamiseksi JYYn on entistä enemmän näyttävä kaikilla, niin Ylistöllä, Mattilanniemessä, Ruusupuistossa, Seminaarinmäellä kuin täällä Agorallakin. 

Suhteita järjestöihin ei voi korostaa liikaa. Järjestöjen kautta JYYllä on mahdollista tavoittaa opiskelijoita huomattavasti laajemmin kuin omien kanaviensa kautta. Jotta tätä arvokasta apua saamme, on meidän tunnuttava järjestöille helposti lähestyttävältä ja tärkeältä. 

Matalampi jäsenmaksu olisi yksi keino tehdä jäsenyydestä kiinnostavampaa. Näemme jäsenmaksun alentamisen mahdollisena pidemmällä aikavälillä kehittämällä Soihdun toimintaa ja yritysyhteistyötä entisestään. 

Meidän on kuitenkin löydettävä nopeampia ja tehokkaampia keinoja, joista haluamme nostaa vaikuttavan ja ajantasaisen edunvalvonnan, yhteisöllisyyden vahvistamisen sekä erilaisten opiskelijoiden tarpeiden huomioimisen.

On siis tärkeää muistaa JYYn asema jäsenistönsä tärkeimpänä edunvalvojana. 

Mielestämme JYYn tulee tulee ottaa kantaa kaikkiin asioihin, jotka vaikuttavat opiskelijoiden hyvään elämään. Oli kyse sitten kansallisista päätöksistä liittyen opiskelijoiden toimeentuloon, kaupungin leikkauksista liittyen joukkoliikenteeseen, kulttuuriin ja harrastusmahdollisuuksiin tai yliopiston suunnitelmista liittyen koulutuksen kehittämiseen. 

JYYn tulee olla erityisen aktiivinen toimija Jyväskylässä, korostaen opiskelijayhteisömme korvaamatonta roolia osana kaupungin kokonaiskuvaa, jo monen vuosikymmenen ajalta. JYY:n tehtävänä on varmistaa, että opiskelijat tullaan ottamaan huomioon kaupungin päätöksenteossa entistä aktiivisemmin. 

Tiedon välitys ja ylioppilaskunnan vaikuttavuus edunvalvojana on turvattava jokaisella tasolla.

Kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden aseman ja yhteisön osalta on vielä paljon kehitettävää ja JYYn tulee pitää tämä mielessä tulevina vuosina. 

Kansainväliset opiskelijat maksavat jäsenmaksua siinä missä muutkin ja ansaitsevat tuntea olonsa kotoisaksi täällä. Silti heille kohdistettu tuki – erityisesti orientaatio – ei vastaa moniin mieltä askarruttaviin kysymyksiin ja he tuntevat olevansa erillään muusta yliopistomme yhteisöstä. Meidän on panostettava enemmän siihen, miten esittelemme JYYtä kansainvälisille opiskelijoille. 

Yksittäiset ponnistelut tutoroinnin kehittämisestä, ainejärjestöjen esiintymisiin ovat hyvä alku, mutta yleinen laajempi muutos lähestymistavassa kansainvälisiin opiskelijoihin mahdollistaisi suomalaisten ja kansainvälisten opiskelijoiden maksimaalisen integroitumisen.

Hyvät edaattorit, 

myös edustajiston työskentely on murroksen edessä ja toivomme, että niin nyt kuin tulevaisuudessa kansainvälisillä opiskelijoilla tulee olemaan entistä matalampi kynnys osallistua toimintaamme. 

Tätä parantavia toimenpiteitä ovat esimerkiksi JYYn sanaston päivittäminen sekä tarpeellisten käännös- ja tulkkaustarpeiden selvittäminen sekä toimeenpano, liittyen keskeisiin asiakirjoihin, sääntöihin ja kokoustoimintaan, tärkeimmät mainitakseni. 

Kansainvälisillä edaattoreilla tulee olla yhdenvertaiset mahdollisuudet vaikuttaa edustajiston ja JYYn toiminnassa.

Edustajiston on hyvä seurata entistä lähempää JYYn kulttuuripalveluiden ja tapahtumatuotannon kehitystä. AU:lle on tärkeää, että JYYn tapahtumat ovat poikkitieteellisiä, mutta myös kokeilunhaluisia ja omaleimaisia. Jokikisen tapahtuman ei tarvitse kiinnostaa koko jäsenistöämme, vaan tärkeintä on, että jokaiselle löytyy jotain.

Meidän on myös syytä tiedostaa, että JYY on historiansa ja resurssiensa ansiosta yksi merkittävimmistä toimijoista koko Jyväskylän kulttuurikentällä. Me AU:ssa haluamme, että JYY on kovaääninen kulttuurin puolestapuhuja myös kuntapoliittisesti.

Jatkuva oppiminen eli korkeakoulujohtoinen työelämälähtöinen osaamisen kehittäminen on koulutuspoliittinen teema, josta edustajiston on syytä keskustella. 

Yliopistolle aihe on tärkeä, koska se vaikuttaa yliopistojen rahoitukseen. Siihen käytetään aikaa ja resursseja, mutta ylioppilaskunnalle aihe on haasteellinen. Elinikäisen oppimisen opiskelijat eivät ole ylioppilaskunnan jäseniä, eikä elinikäisen oppimisen teema koske suoraan ylioppilaskunnan jäseniä. Tästä huolimatta kaikki, mikä vaikuttaa yliopiston rahoitukseen, vaikuttaa opiskelijoihin, meidän jäseniimme.

Edustajiston tulisi pohtia, miten ylioppilaskunnan tulisi suhtautua jatkuvan oppimisen teemaan.

Edustajiston toiminnalle tärkeintä on kuitenkin se, arvoisat edaattorit, että täällä vaalii hyvä henki. Opiskelijoiden edunvalvojina, on tärkeää, että kuulemme erilaisia opiskelijaryhmiä aktiivisesti, hyödynnämme asiantuntijaresurssia ja ennen kaikkea kuulemme ja kunnioitamme toisiamme.

[En] We gave a speech at the meeting of representative council about our goals for the election cycle. We want to share our speech to our constituents to be open and have accountability:

Dear representatives, 

Now and in the future, JYY must be a community where people want to belong to and in which they want to influence. The low turnout in the elections for the Council of Representatives gave us a clear indication that there is still work to be done. We, as representatives, have an important role to promote the visibility of JYY in our own communities. Let’s use that. 

But it is not up to a single representative to change the whole situation, we need a community. To strengthen the sense of community, JYY needs to be more visible on all of our campuses, in Ylistö, Mattilanniemi, Ruusupuisto, Seminaarinmäki and right here in Agora.

Relations with associations cannot be overstated. Through associations, JYY has the opportunity to reach students much more widely than through our own channels. In order to receive this valuable help, we need to feel accessible and important to the associations.

Lower membership fees would be one way to make membership more attractive. We see the possibility of lowering the membership fee in the longer term by further developing Soihtu’s activities and business cooperation.

However, we must find faster and more effective ways to do this. We want to highlight effective and relevant advocacy, stronger community building and a better understanding of the needs of diverse students.

Thus, it is important to remember JYY’s role as the main lobbyist for its members. 

We believe that JYY should take a stand on issues that affect the good life of students. Considering national decisions on students’ income, city cuts in public transport, culture and hobby opportunities or university plans for the development of education. 

JYY should be a particularly active player in Jyväskylä, highlighting the irreplaceable role of our student community as part of the city’s overall image, for many decades. JYY’s task is to ensure that students will be taken into account more actively in the city’s decision-making. 

The communication and the effectiveness of the Students’ Union as an advocacy body must be ensured at every level.

Concerning the international student community of our university, there is much to accomplish, and should be on the mind of JYY in the upcoming years. 

We pay the student union fee just as any other and deserve to feel at home here. Yet, international support – especially orientation and matriculation – does not answer many of the looming questions and isolates international students from the rest of the student community. 

We must put more effort into how we introduce JYY to international students. Individual efforts from strategic tutor assignments to appearances by subject associations are a great start, but a universal approach would ensure maximum integration of Finnish and International students.

The work of the council is facing a turning point. We should work today and in the future to lower the threshold for us, international representatives, to take part in the action. 

Measures to improve this includes updating the JYY vocabulary, identifying and implementing the necessary translation needs related to key documents, rules and meeting activities, to name but a few. 

We must have equal opportunities to influence the activities of the JYY and the work of council.

The Council should pay more attention to the development of JYY’s culture services and event production. The AU finds it important that all JYY events are interdisciplinary but also experimental and unique. Every event doesn’t have to be interesting in the eyes of the whole membership. Instead, it’s important that there is something for everyone.

We should also be aware that thanks to its history and resources, JYY is one of the most significant actors in the whole culture sector in Jyväskylä. We in the AU want JYY to defend culture services loudly in our municipal advocacy.

Life-long learning, or university-led, work-life oriented skills development, is an education policy issue that should be discussed by the Council of Representatives. 

The university is interested in the topic because it affects university funding. Time and resources are used to develop our university’s life-long learning but to the Student union the topic is challenging. The life-long learners are not members of the student union and the theme of life-long learning doesn’t directly affect the members of the student union. This said, anything that affects university’s funding affects the students, our members.

The council of representatives should reflect on how the Student Union approach the theme of life-long learning.

But the most important thing, dear representatives, is that a good atmosphere prevails here. As student advocates, it is important that we actively consult with different student groups, make use of our expert resources and, above all, listen and respect each other.
