This is the website of the Union of Alvar. What is that? Let’s explain.
The Student Union of the University of Jyväskylä (also known as JYY) has a Council of Representatives, which is the highest decision-making body of the Union. For example, the council has power over the JYY membership fee, the budget and building projects. It also chooses the Board of Executives and key staff of the Student Union.
The 41 representatives are elected every two years. There are various groups of candidates, some of them party-political and some based on subjects, from which to choose who you want to vote. The Union of Alvar is a new group formed in 2015 to replace the former United Language Students. The group consists of students of the humanities and educational sciences. We bring the much needed humanistic point of view to the student union, and wish to bring JYY closer to the students and the students closer to JYY.
By not committing ourselves to party politics we are making it easy for students to come and be a part of the decision-making in matters that concern them. Below you can find our main focus areas, which demonstrate the issues that are closest to our hearts.
Thus the Union of Alvar, in short AU, is pure gold.
Oh, and if you’re wondering about the name, it comes from the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, who has designed many of the buildings on the Seminaarinmäki campus.
